Sleep deprivation is defined as the condition of not having enough sleep. It can be caused by not getting enough hours of sleep, or getting poor quality sleep. Lack of sleep can cause any of the following:
  • Increased risk of health problems, such as stroke, heart attack, high blood pressure, and obesity
  • High risk of injuries and accidents
  • Weight gain
  • Inability to cope with stress
  • Disruption of your partner’s sleep habits
  • Fetal/childhood growth retardation
  • Fatigue, lethargy, and lack of motivation
  • Moodiness and irritability
  • Reduced creativity and problem-solving skills
  • Reduced immunity; frequent colds and infections
  • Concentration and memory problems
Recently studies suggest that abnormal sleeping patterns may result in an increased risk of premature death. Those who generally slept for less than six hours a night were more likely to experience a premature death over a period of 25 years than those who consistently got six to eight hours of sleep. This research from studies across the U.S., Asia and Europe looked at over 25 years of information and covered more than a million people and over 100,000 deaths. Overall, sleep deprivation raises mortality risks.
