There are several things that can be done to get a better night’s sleep. Keep in mind that what works for one person won’t necessarily work for everyone, so you’ll need to figure out what works best for your individual needs and preferences.- Avoid exercising in the late evening, as this can interfere with sleep.
- Keep your bedroom dark with shades, curtains and an eye mask.
- Herbal remedies such as chamomile, catnip and fennel can help aid in falling asleep.
- Warm milk also works for some.
- If you choose to read, pick something light and entertaining. Don’t read the news or something disturbing prior to retiring for the evening.
- The bedroom should be used only for sleep and sex. Do not bring your work to bed with you! Leave the laptop in the office.
- Turn off your cellular phones, pager, and PDA to avoid disrupting sleep.
- Use sleeping pills and melatonin only as a last resort. Even though melatonin is natural, there are side effects. It would be wise to speak to a physician before going this route.
Once you get into a solid fitness routine, sleep should come more easily to you, and you should be able to sleep more soundly. You will also be more alert and focused throughout the day and be able to reap the benefits of a good night’s sleep!
